Adapting Literature into Theatre

Starting with a chapter from Gregory Maguire’s original book WICKED, we will explore the building blocks of good storytelling on stage – writing, acting, directing and design – by creating our own scenes and ultimately, our own lesson plans derived from that material.

Each week will focus on a new discipline. Topics include:

  • Text analysis
  • Theme
  • Structure
  • Character
  • Music
  • Design
  • Casting
  • Direction
  • Criticism

Throughout the course, we will visit with various members of the WICKED company who will add to the discussion with their experiences and, in certain cases, illustrate key points.

Relevant Core Standards:

Craft and Structure, Integration of Knowledge and Ideas, Emotional/Social Learning, Writing, Drama

What past participants have said about this course:
“This was a great course, and the four weeks just flew by. The work was fast paced, but it was such a fun topic, that you WANTED to do it. Most of the time I turned my assignments in early because I got so into it, I would finish them quickly.”

“Our teachers were supportive and encouraging to everyone…and we had a lot of fun learning about each other and seeing how our individuality brought a great variety of ideas into our work. I highly recommend the course .”
