Summer Writing Workshop
Offered: Summer Session I (June 18 – July 13, 2012) and II (July 16 – August 10, 2012)
Prerequisite: None; Designed for rising 9th and 10th grade students
This is a course in writing workshop; we will look at writing as a dynamic process more so than as a finished product. Throughout this course, you will generate and organize ideas by pre-writing with webs and outlines. You will also draft and revise assignments repeatedly after receiving feedback from your peers, your teacher, and your own reflections. Further, you will be reading and commenting on others’ writing, both to offer advice and to learn from one another. We hope that when you leave the course, you will have an understanding of the writing and grammar skills addressed, in addition to knowing how to approach, work through, and polish an essay for any class you may take in high school.
In this course, you will learn…
• to develop the analytic paragraph, incorporating topic sentences, evidence, and discussion.
• to organize and structure the multi-paragraph essay.
• to incorporate evidence fluidly into your writing.
• to provide in-text citations and prepare a Works Cited page.
• to captivate and orient an audience with introductory and concluding paragraphs.
• to adhere to elements of grammar, making your writing more clear and cohesive.
