Broadway and OSG Unite to Create Great Professional Development Course

The Online School for Girls in collaboration with Broadway Online Learning Center is proud to announce a professional development course based on Broadway’s most popular musical: WICKED: Page To Stage

The Online School for Girls and The Broadway Online Learning Center are proud to announce a collaborative effort to bring Broadway’s top artists to online course work in the arts.

The first offering is a four-week professional development course that connects educators with cast and creative team members of Broadway’s WICKED to explore the various disciplines involved in the process of creating theatre.  Using WICKED to illustrate methods and ideas, the class covers dramatic adaptation, interpretation, design and developing lesson plans based on social emotional content.

The Online School for Girls (OSG) is a non-profit consortium of fifty schools from around the country that offers challenging online course work for high-achieving girls and thoughtful professional development courses for faculty.  Begun in 2009, the School was both the first single-gender online school and first independent online school in the world.  Students and faculty from twenty-eight states, England, India, Australia, and Canada have taken courses with the School.

The Broadway Online Learning Center (BOLC) provides an exceptional arts education experience by connecting students and educators worldwide with the Broadway community for vibrant coursework based on the National Standards for Arts Education.  The BOLC team comprises teaching artists from Juilliard, Lincoln Center, Yale and Teach For America – as well as Broadway’s most accomplished artists.  Course work is based on classroom experience at the Broadway Teachers Workshop and Broadway Student Summit, integrating Broadway creative artists and performers into the course – from designers to music directors to authors, composers, producers and performers.

Brad Rathgeber, Director of OSG, imagines this as the ideal combination: “Online education for both students and adults is growing rapidly, and yet the quality of online programs in uneven.  By having two organizations that have created exceptionally high quality professional development courses work together, we are confident that we can create an unparalleled online professional development course.  We could not be more excited to work with the great team at the Broadway Online Learning Center.”

Gordon Greenberg, Co-Director of the BOLC, says “After more than a decade connecting educators and students with the Broadway community, we are now thrilled to be able offer the extraordinary educational opportunities of learning with Broadway’s best creative minds in an independent school experience that is not limited by location. OSG teaches what it means to be literate, participatory, and fluent in the tools of the 21st century through its very delivery mechanism.  This works particularly well with the central tenets of BOLC – collaboration, creativity and confidence.”
